Computer maintainance tips | Improve PC speed

Computers today are used most frequently and as such they are just machines .So the computer users must do some maintaining work in order to improve their computer working speed. Below are some things which should be kept in mind with which you can avoid your computer's problems.

1.Whenever your PC boots i.e starts let all applications start properly and then start using your PC.

2.Desktop wallpaper's size should be less than 1mb.Do not set very high resolution wallpapers on your       desktop.Desktop(RAM) is the working area so keep it empty and uncluttered as much as possible.

3.Each desktop short-cut occupies 500 bytes of RAM so decrease the number of short-cuts which are not      needed.

4.Once in a month clear your internet , browser's cache and delete temporary internet files regularly.

5.After closing any applications refresh the desktop.These will remove the temporary unused files of that      particular application from RAM.

6.Empty the recycle bin regularly. Items in the recycle bin also occupy memory, files are not removed      from hard disk until you empty the recycle bin.

7.Go to START --> All programs --> Accessories --> system Tools
   Use Disk defragmenter and Disk clean up once in month or a two.This frees up hard disk space and    rearranges your files so that your appliactions work faster.

8. Right click on my computer on desktop --> choose properties --> Under Advanced tab
   Choose performance settings and select Adjust for best performance.This will disable unnecessary    visual effects.

9.Whenever you install a new software it asks whether you want tray icon?,select no or disable the tray    icon.Tray icons slow down booting speed of your PC and also use RAM.Also uncheck start at boot-up so    that booting speed increases.

10.The default installation directory is C:/ but it is recommended that try to free up C: drive as much as     possible.So install programs in other directory.For very large programs like Photoshop and games use     one drive only and for small programs use another drive.

11.Dust is also a cause for slowing down your PC so regularly protect your CPU and components from     dust.Open your CPU cabinet and clean up dust regularly because when dust sticks on fan it jams it and     CPU gets heated very much.

Single click shutdown windows xp

Shutting down windows is very hectic going to start then selecting shutdown an all that.

Windows XP can shut down your computer from the command line box with the help of DOS, Moreover, you can do this by clicking your mouse only once.

Follow these steps:-
1.Right-click on an empty Desktop spot
2.Select New -> Shortcut
3.Type shutdown -s -c "Shutting down!" -t 30
4.Click Next -> type a suggestive name for your new shortcut -> finally, click Finish.

EXPLANATION

This is done by Shutdown.exe located in C:\Windows\System32

syntax:

shutdown [-i|-l|-s|-r|-a] [-f] [-m \\computername] [-t xx] [-c "Text"] [-d[u][p]:xx:yy]

ARGUMENTS:

-a = Abort system shutdown in progress ONLY IF the -t xx timeout option was already set to ANY value other than 0. ALL switches except -l and -m are ignored during abort.
-c "Text" = Text comment (case insensitive) to be displayed in the Message area of the System Shutdown window. MUST be enclosed between quotes. Maximum allowed 127 characters.
-d [u][p]:xx:yy = Reason code for shutdown
u = User code.
p = Planned shutdown code.
xx = Major reason code. Positive integer number less than 256
yy = Minor reason code. Positive integer number less than 65536.
-f = Force running applications to close without warning.
-i = Display the shutdown interface (GUI). MUST be the first option!
-l = Log off the current user of the local computer (default action). Can NOT be used with the -m option unless the current user has Sysadmin rights, in which case the -m switch takes precedence.
-m \\computername = Remote/network computer name (most always case sensitive) to log off/restart/shut down. Current user MUST have Sysadmin rights to be allowed to use this switch!
-s = Shut down the local computer.
-r = Shut down and restart (reboot) the local computer.
-t xx = Set shutdown timer to timeout for xx seconds. IF NOT specified defaults to 20 seconds. Allowed values between 0 and 99 seconds. The -a switch is the ONLY one that CAN be used during the timeout period.

NOTES:
The dash (-) in front of these switches can be replaced by a forward slash (/).

Spaces are NOT required to separate the shutdown command from ANY following switches, but ARE required to separate ANY switch from its following parameter(s), if any.
For example:

shutdown -s -c "Shutting down!" -t 30

tells your computer to shutdown after waiting for 30 seconds while the System Shutdown window will display text above in the Message area.

Optional: after you're done creating your customized shortcut for shutdown -> right-click on it -> select Properties -> enter your desired key "combo" in the Shortcut Key box (e.g. Ctrl + Alt + End) -> click OK/Apply.
From now on just left-click on your shutdown shortcut or hit that key combination to turn off/restart/log off your computer.

SHUTDOWN-RESTART-LOGOFF PC with a C program

This is an amazing post with which one can shutdown the computer with the help of a C program.
C has the ability to execute DOS command with the help of stdlib.h header file and system() function.
System invokes a DOS command interpreter from a C file while executing it.
NOTE : on just compiling it will not run, you have to double click the .exe file which will be of the same name as your C file.
For example I saved my file with the name as "system_1.c", So i had to run system_1.exe as shown below

[sourcecode language="c"]
#include
#include
#include

void main()
{
int ch;
clrscr();
printf("\n\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~SHUTDOWN MENU~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\n");
printf("1.Shutdown\n2.Restart\n3.Logoff\n4.Hibernate\n5.exit");
printf("\nEnter choice : ");
scanf("%d",&ch);
switch(ch)
{
case 1:system("shutdown -s");
break;
case 2:system("shutdown -r");
break;
case 3:system("shutdown -l");
break;
case 4:system("shutdown -h");
break;
case 5:exit(1);
break;
default:printf("Invalid choice");
}
getch();
}
[/sourcecode]
