Computer maintainance tips | Improve PC speed

Computers today are used most frequently and as such they are just machines .So the computer users must do some maintaining work in order to improve their computer working speed. Below are some things which should be kept in mind with which you can avoid your computer's problems.

1.Whenever your PC boots i.e starts let all applications start properly and then start using your PC.

2.Desktop wallpaper's size should be less than 1mb.Do not set very high resolution wallpapers on your       desktop.Desktop(RAM) is the working area so keep it empty and uncluttered as much as possible.

3.Each desktop short-cut occupies 500 bytes of RAM so decrease the number of short-cuts which are not      needed.

4.Once in a month clear your internet , browser's cache and delete temporary internet files regularly.

5.After closing any applications refresh the desktop.These will remove the temporary unused files of that      particular application from RAM.

6.Empty the recycle bin regularly. Items in the recycle bin also occupy memory, files are not removed      from hard disk until you empty the recycle bin.

7.Go to START --> All programs --> Accessories --> system Tools
   Use Disk defragmenter and Disk clean up once in month or a two.This frees up hard disk space and    rearranges your files so that your appliactions work faster.

8. Right click on my computer on desktop --> choose properties --> Under Advanced tab
   Choose performance settings and select Adjust for best performance.This will disable unnecessary    visual effects.

9.Whenever you install a new software it asks whether you want tray icon?,select no or disable the tray    icon.Tray icons slow down booting speed of your PC and also use RAM.Also uncheck start at boot-up so    that booting speed increases.

10.The default installation directory is C:/ but it is recommended that try to free up C: drive as much as     possible.So install programs in other directory.For very large programs like Photoshop and games use     one drive only and for small programs use another drive.

11.Dust is also a cause for slowing down your PC so regularly protect your CPU and components from     dust.Open your CPU cabinet and clean up dust regularly because when dust sticks on fan it jams it and     CPU gets heated very much.

Single click shutdown windows xp

Shutting down windows is very hectic going to start then selecting shutdown an all that.

Windows XP can shut down your computer from the command line box with the help of DOS, Moreover, you can do this by clicking your mouse only once.

Follow these steps:-
1.Right-click on an empty Desktop spot
2.Select New -> Shortcut
3.Type shutdown -s -c "Shutting down!" -t 30
4.Click Next -> type a suggestive name for your new shortcut -> finally, click Finish.

EXPLANATION

This is done by Shutdown.exe located in C:\Windows\System32

syntax:

shutdown [-i|-l|-s|-r|-a] [-f] [-m \\computername] [-t xx] [-c "Text"] [-d[u][p]:xx:yy]

ARGUMENTS:

-a = Abort system shutdown in progress ONLY IF the -t xx timeout option was already set to ANY value other than 0. ALL switches except -l and -m are ignored during abort.
-c "Text" = Text comment (case insensitive) to be displayed in the Message area of the System Shutdown window. MUST be enclosed between quotes. Maximum allowed 127 characters.
-d [u][p]:xx:yy = Reason code for shutdown
u = User code.
p = Planned shutdown code.
xx = Major reason code. Positive integer number less than 256
yy = Minor reason code. Positive integer number less than 65536.
-f = Force running applications to close without warning.
-i = Display the shutdown interface (GUI). MUST be the first option!
-l = Log off the current user of the local computer (default action). Can NOT be used with the -m option unless the current user has Sysadmin rights, in which case the -m switch takes precedence.
-m \\computername = Remote/network computer name (most always case sensitive) to log off/restart/shut down. Current user MUST have Sysadmin rights to be allowed to use this switch!
-s = Shut down the local computer.
-r = Shut down and restart (reboot) the local computer.
-t xx = Set shutdown timer to timeout for xx seconds. IF NOT specified defaults to 20 seconds. Allowed values between 0 and 99 seconds. The -a switch is the ONLY one that CAN be used during the timeout period.

NOTES:
The dash (-) in front of these switches can be replaced by a forward slash (/).

Spaces are NOT required to separate the shutdown command from ANY following switches, but ARE required to separate ANY switch from its following parameter(s), if any.
For example:

shutdown -s -c "Shutting down!" -t 30

tells your computer to shutdown after waiting for 30 seconds while the System Shutdown window will display text above in the Message area.

Optional: after you're done creating your customized shortcut for shutdown -> right-click on it -> select Properties -> enter your desired key "combo" in the Shortcut Key box (e.g. Ctrl + Alt + End) -> click OK/Apply.
From now on just left-click on your shutdown shortcut or hit that key combination to turn off/restart/log off your computer.

SHUTDOWN-RESTART-LOGOFF PC with a C program

This is an amazing post with which one can shutdown the computer with the help of a C program.
C has the ability to execute DOS command with the help of stdlib.h header file and system() function.
System invokes a DOS command interpreter from a C file while executing it.
NOTE : on just compiling it will not run, you have to double click the .exe file which will be of the same name as your C file.
For example I saved my file with the name as "system_1.c", So i had to run system_1.exe as shown below

[sourcecode language="c"]
#include
#include
#include

void main()
{
int ch;
clrscr();
printf("\n\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~SHUTDOWN MENU~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\n");
printf("1.Shutdown\n2.Restart\n3.Logoff\n4.Hibernate\n5.exit");
printf("\nEnter choice : ");
scanf("%d",&ch);
switch(ch)
{
case 1:system("shutdown -s");
break;
case 2:system("shutdown -r");
break;
case 3:system("shutdown -l");
break;
case 4:system("shutdown -h");
break;
case 5:exit(1);
break;
default:printf("Invalid choice");
}
getch();
}
[/sourcecode]

SEARCH E-BOOK IN GOOGLE

Google has some fantastic potential for you to find whatever you are after on the internet.

To search for a book / program / file perhaps try the following.

Go to Google's search page and use the following criteria in the search dialog

intitle:index.of? file extension Name of item

e.g. intitle:index.of? chm syngress

This will hopefully give you a listing of all websites that google has cached that contain references to files in CHM format that are published by author SYNGRESS.

---------------
I use in Google

+("index of") +("/ebooks"|"/book") +(chm|pdf|zip|rar) +syngress

or

allinurl: +(rar|chm|zip|pdf|tgz) Syngress

Enjoy

FACTS ABOUT GOOGLE SEARCH ENGINE

Google Search or Google Web Search is a web search engine owned by Google Inc. and is the most-used search engine on the Web. Google receives several hundred million queries each day through its various services. The main purpose of Google Search is to hunt for text in webpages, as opposed to other data, such as with Google Image Search. Google search was originally developed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1997.

Google Search provides at least 22 special features beyond the original word-search capability.These include synonyms, weather forecasts, time zones, stock quotes, maps, earthquake data, movie showtimes, airports, home listings, and sports scores. There are special features for numbers, including ranges (70..73), prices, temperatures, money/unit conversions ("10.5 cm in inches"), calculations ( 3*4+sqrt(6)-pi/2 ), package tracking, patents, area codes,[6] and language translation of displayed pages.

The order of search results (ghits for Google hits) on Google's search-results pages is based, in part, on a priority rank called a "PageRank". Google Search provides many options for customized search (see below: Search options), using Boolean operators such as: exclusion ("-xx"), inclusion ("+xx"), alternatives ("xx OR yy"), and wildcard ("x * x").

Search results

The exact percentage of the total of web pages that Google indexes is not known, as it is very hard to actually calculate. Google not only indexes and caches web pages but also takes "snapshots" of other file types, which include PDF, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, Flash SWF, plain text files, and so on.[12] Except in the case of text and SWF files, the cached version is a conversion to (X)HTML, allowing those without the corresponding viewer application to read the file.

Users can customize the search engine, by setting a default language, using the "SafeSearch" filtering technology and set the number of results shown on each page. Google has been criticized for placing long-term cookies on users' machines to store these preferences, a tactic which also enables them to track a user's search terms and retain the data for more than a year. For any query, up to the first 1000 results can be shown with a maximum of 100 displayed per page. The ability to specify the number of results is available only if "Instant Search" is not enabled. If "Instant Search" is enabled, only 10 results are displayed, regardless of this setting.

"I'm Feeling Lucky"

Google's homepage includes a button labelled "I'm Feeling Lucky". When a user clicks on the button the user will be taken directly to the first search result, bypassing the search engine results page. The thought is that if a user is "feeling lucky", the search engine will return the perfect match the first time without having to page through the search results. According to a study by Tom Chavez of "Rapt", this feature costs Google $110 million a year as 1% of all searches use this feature and bypass all advertising.

On October 30, 2009, for some users, the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button was removed from Google's main page, along with the regular search button. Both buttons were replaced with a field that reads, "This space intentionally left blank." This text faded out when the mouse was moved on the page, and normal search functionality is achieved by filling in the search field with the desired terms and pressing enter. A Google spokesperson explains, "This is just a test, and a way for us to gauge whether our users will like an even simpler search interface." Personalized Google homepages retained both buttons and their normal functions.

On May 21, 2010, the 30th anniversary of Pac-Man, the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button was replaced with a button reading the words "Insert Coin". After pressing the button, the user would begin a Google-themed game of Pac-Man in the area where the Google logo would normally be. Pressing the button a second time would begin a two-player version of the same game that includes Ms. Pacman for player 2. This version can be accessed at http://www.google.com/pacman as a permanent link to the page.

Error messages

Some searches will give a 403 Forbidden error with the text

"We're sorry... ... but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now. We'll restore your access as quickly as possible, so try again soon. In the meantime, if you suspect that your computer or network has been infected, you might want to run a virus checker or spyware remover to make sure that your systems are free of viruses and other spurious software. We apologize for the inconvenience, and hope we'll see you again on Google."
sometimes followed by a CAPTCHA prompt.

The screen was first reported in 2005, and was a response to the heavy use of Google by search engine optimization companies to check on ranks of sites they were optimizing. The message is triggered by high volumes of requests from a single IP address. Google apparently uses the Google cookie as part of its determination of refusing service.

In June 2009, after the death of pop superstar Michael Jackson, this message appeared to many internet users who were searching Google for news stories related to the singer, and was assumed by Google to be a DDoS attack, although many queries were submitted by legitimate searchers.

C PROGRAMMING FACTS

C programming language was developed in 1972 by Dennis Ritchie and Brian Kernighan
at the Bell Telephone Laboratories (AT&T Bell Laboratories) for use with the Unix operating system for programming computer operating systems. C is a procedural oriented programming language.
C was designed as a minimalist language to be used in writing operating systems for minicomputers, which had very limited memories compared with the mainframe computers of the period

Also C was designed for implementing system software. Although C was designed for implementing system software,it is also widely used for developing portable application software.

The initial development of C was devised during 1969–73, alongside the early development of the UNIX operating system. It was based on CPL (Combined Programming Language), which had been first condensed into the B programming language and later on it was called as computer programming language by Ken Thompson, an American computer scientist and a colleague of Ritchie. Ritchie rewrote and restored features from BCPL to create C-Programming Language, rewrite the development of the Unix operating system in C language.

As the UNIX system was enhanced, a series of changes took place in C between 1977 and 1979. During this time a description of the language became widely available through a book, The C Programming Language (1978), by Brian W. Kernighan and Ritchie. In the mid-1980s it became important to establish an official standard for C, since it was being used in projects subject to commercial and government contracts.

In 1983 the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) set up a committee that further amended and standardized the language. Since then C has been referred to as ANSI Standard C, and it remains popular in the world of UNIX-like operating systems. C also became one of the most common programming languages used for writing other system software and applications. Descendants of C include Concurrent C, Objective C, C*, and the widely used C++. The programming language Java was introduced in 1994 as a simplified subset of C for deployment over the Internet and for use in portable devices with limited memory or limited processing capabilities.

C is one of the most popular programming language.It is widely used on many different software platforms, and there are few computer architectures for which a C compiler does not exist. C has greatly influenced many other popular programming languages, most notably C++, which originally began as an extension to C.

C++ PROGRAMMING FACTS

C++ Programming Language (Object Oriented Language) represents an enhancement of the C Programming Language . Initial development of C++ was started by Bjarne Stroustrup from Bell labs in 1980. He added features to C and formed what he called “C with Classes”.After that he had combined use of classes and object-oriented features (information hiding, data abstraction, encapsulation, modularity, polymorphism, and inheritance.) with the power and efficiency of C. The name C++ was given in 1983 when first manual was published. First commercial release of the language appeared in 1985 and also first edition of book “The C++ Programming Language” by Bjarne Stroustrup was released.

About Founder : Bjarne Stroustrup had studied in the doctoral program at the Computing Laboratory at Cambridge University prior to joining Bell Labs. Now, Bell Labs no longer has that name since part of Bell Labs became AT&T Labs.
C++ was developed significantly after its first release. In particular, “ARM C++” added exceptions and templates, and ISO C++ added RTTI, namespaces, and a standard library. C++ Programming Language was designed for the UNIX system environment. With C++ Programming Language , programmers could improve the quality of code produced , thus making reusable code easier to write.

During the 80s, the C++ Programming language was being refined until it became a language with its own personality. All that achieved with very few losses of compatibility of C code and without resigning to its most important characteristics. In fact, the ANSI standard for the C language published in 1989 took good part of the contributions of C++ to structured programming.

From 1990 on, ANSI committee X3J16 had started the development of a specific standard for C++. In 1998, C++ Programming Language lived a great expansion in its use and today C++ is the preferred language to develop professional applications on all platforms.

C++0x is the unofficial name of the new standard for the C++ programming language. It is intended to replace the existing C++ standard , which was published in 1998 and updated in 2003 known as C++98 and C++03. C++ standardization committee set 2009 as the target date for C++09, the next C++ standard.

C++09 will include at least two major core features: rvalue references and type concepts. Other core features are also included, such as automatic deduction of types from initializes, delegating constructors, nullptr, and even a solution to the right angle bracket nuisance.

PHP PROGRAMMING FACTS

PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor ) was released in the 1995. PHP was originally known as Personal Home Page written as a set of Common Gateway Interface (CGI) in C Language by Danish/Greenlandic programmer Rasmus Lerdorf. Lerdorf initially created these Personal Home Page Tools to replace a small set of Perl scripts he had been using to maintain his personal homepage and was originally designed to replace a set of Perl scripts to maintain his Personal Home Pages (also known as PHP) in 1994. He combined these with his Form Interpreter to create PHP/FI, which had more functionality. PHP/FI included a larger implementation for the C programming language and could communicate with databases, enabling the building of simple, dynamic web applications. Lerdorf released PHP publicly on June 8, 1995 to accelerate bug location and improve the code.This release was named PHP version 2 and already had the basic functionality that programming php has today. Mainly , PHP was designed to create dynamic and more interactive web pages. It is a server-side scripting language embed with HTML. Now a days , it is the most widely-used open-source and general-purpose scripting language. PHP code in a script can interect with databases, create images, read and write files and talk to remote servers. So the output from PHP code is combined with HTML in script and the result is sent to the user as a web page. PHP versions till date (php info): PHP 2 starting from 1995 PHP 3.0.0 to 3.0.17 starting from 1997 PHP 4.0.0 to 4.0.6 , 4.1.0 to 4.1.2 , 4.2.0 to 4.2.3 , 4.3.0 to 4.3.11 , 4.4.0 to 4.4.9 starting from 2000 PHP 5.0.0 to 5.0.5 , 5.1.0 to 5.1.6 , 5.2.0 to 5.2.11 , 5. 3.1 starting from 2004 PHP 6.0.0 All major operating systems including Linux, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and RISC OS , you can use PHP in all these operating systems. As you know there are procedural programming or object oriented programming. PHP uses either procedural programming or object oriented programming. Also you can mix them and use both ( procedural programming or object oriented programming ). As i mention above, PHP is used mainly in server-side scripting, command line interface and writing desktop applications. PHP also supports ODBC, the Open Database Connection standard which allows you to connect to other databases supporting this world standard. For database , phpMyAdmin is most widely used for PHP developement. Server-side scripting is the most traditional one for PHP development. In order to use PHP for server-side scripting you need 1. PHP parser 2. Web server 3. Web browser. The PHP codes entered with the parser on a web server will be translated into a PHP page that can be viewed on your web browser. Main reason behind popularity of PHP language is , it can be embedded directly into HTML coding. It has more benefits such as the following 1. It can be used on all major operating systems. 2. It can be supported by most of the web servers. 3. The latest version of PHP development is a very stable and grown-up language used for web programming like Java and C#. Both the PHP engine and the PHP code can be used on any platform, which makes PHP extremely flexible. PHP has many features designed specifically for use in websites. PHP can be used to make your website secure by implementing mandatory sign in feature by asking the user or the administrator to enter a valid username and password. Adding such a feature is easy as PHP can display a HTML form and process the information that the user types in. This sign in feature can be an excellent way of getting to know about your customer's profile. The popularity of PHP Development continues to grow rapidly because it has many advantages over other programming language. PHP is fast because the time needed to process and load a webpage is relatively low. PHP is also versatile and it runs on a wide variety of operating systems. PHP hosting is a server-side scripting environment that is used to create dynamic web pages. It is an open source language which is widely used by programmers and web developers. Open source gives a lot of advantages over proprietary programming languages. Due to this reason, PHP has been the one of the most popular server-side scripting language so far. Almost all the hosting providers offer PHP hosting services these days. PHP is especially strong in relational databases, which are used for dynamic content and e-commerce applications.
